Alcoholism and Rehabilitation

By Alice Tanston

There are a lot of addictions, but one of the most prominent is alcoholism. Between the ease of access and how much is readily available, addiction to alcohol spans all types of people and all ages. Because of the ease of access, people do not believe that this is a drug. They do not believe that drinking is a real problem. This is a common myth as alcoholism can do a great deal of damage to not just the drinker, but those around them. Going to Milestones Ranch Malibu is helpful to even alcoholics.

What are the signs of alcohol abuse?

There are many warning signs when it comes to alcohol abuse. They begin to be apathetic in regards to their responsibilities and relationships. They decide to drink instead of doing what they said they would do. If they are in school, their schooling is deeply affected. If they have a career, there is damage done to that. They could end up losing everything they worked so hard for. They seem more reckless, because they may be drinking and driving. Or they may also think that they can do anything without facing real consequences. The things that they do are typically not what a normal, healthy adult would do. They face the possibility of criminal charges if they end up drinking and driving, especially if they end up hurting someone.

Alcoholics do not stop drinking despite their relationships and responsibilities. This causes struggles in relationships as most people do not want to see those they love become addicted to such a thing. They also begin to use alcohol as self-medication. They use a long, stressful day or situation as an excuse to go drink after it.

What about symptoms and other warning signs?

When someone drinks alcohol excessively every day, their body forms an attachment and need for the alcohol. Once the drinking stops, their bodies go through withdrawal. They are incredibly moody and feel very sick. They become depressed and shaky. Intense headaches come about often and are faced with the sweats. They spend a lot of time either exhausted or sleeping, though insomnia can be a big issue with alcoholics too. Due to being sick with nausea, they simply do not eat like they are supposed to.

After an alcoholic has been drinking excessively for an extended period of time, their withdrawal symptoms may be worse. Many alcoholics experience hallucinations and generalized confusion. They end up feeling like they may have the beginnings of the flu, as they have a fever on top of the nausea. They may have a shorter fuse than usual. Seizures are also possible. They are life threatening and treatment must be found to prevent any more damage.

Myths about Alcoholism

Due to how long alcoholism has been around, there are a lot of myths that stem from denial. They will tell themselves and others that they can stop drinking whenever they want, which is simply them pretending they have power over it. They will need outside help. They think that their drinking really only affects them, which is absolutely incorrect. A lot of things can go wrong throughout any type of addiction and it affects everyone close to you. They become unreliable and people lose their faith in them.

Getting treatment:

Once a drinker gets to the point of dependence it is important to seek treatment. There are plenty of rehabilitation services out there. One of the best known places is called Milestones Ranch Malibu.
