Dental health in Sheffield

By Alex J. Cunningham

Dental health is very important to those who live, work and look after Sheffield. Sheffield City Council have been working with the general government to deliver better promotions and initiatives that will encourage the city's citizens to take better care of their teeth.

It has been revealed by NHS Sheffield that 41% of children aged between five and 12 in the area have experienced dental caries such as tooth decay and cavities. They also calculated that the cost of treating oral disease in both adults and children in Sheffield costs them 42 million every year, both figures the NHS plan on reducing dramatically over the next few years.

In 2008 the NHS Sheffield Oral Health Promotion Strategy 2009-2012 was announced, with the two main objectives being to develop and review a community fluoride programme and to develop new care pathways for dental services. The strategy will primarily focus on preventative care to help lower the percentage of caries in children under 12 and to also reduce levels of mouth cancer in the city's adults.

NHS Sheffield are also keen to equalise accessibility to dental services, as some areas of the city do not have as good dental services as others. The NHS aims to increase dental services in Darnall and Manor but are also putting more money into oral health improvement messages and into creating new care pathways for those suffering from dental anxiety or phobia.

The city is also home The School of Clinical Dentistry at The University of Sheffield; one the country's best dental schools. The school provides students with both undergraduate and postgraduate courses and even has an initiative aimed at year 12 Sheffield pupils who are thinking about a career in dentistry by offering them a two-year hands-on course to support their future career. The university's dental team are also world leaders in various aspects of dental research, including person-centred, bioscience and bioengineering research.
