New York is one of the states that have implemented the Freedom of Information Act which was approved in the year 1968. This law has mandated the local government to make all personal documents open to the public which includes criminal records. New York Criminal records are archived by the office of the Department of Criminal Justice Services.

Criminal records in New York are used in a number of reasons. It is primarily accessed and used by the residents of the state to conduct a background check on a certain individual. People would check out the criminal history of the people they work with such as their neighbors, tutors, caretakers and even babysitters. By doing so they can be cautious about who they interact with daily. It is one of the documents used by authorities when conducting a criminal investigation. Sometimes it is the missing evidence that can help in resolve the criminal investigation.

A New York Criminal record contains information about the conviction of the involved individual. One can also find arrest details, sentences given as well as dispositions and other misdemeanors where the individual has been involved with. It is also where the fingerprints of the convicted individuals are archived accordingly. One can also go to the state police department to get the information that you need. Now, the Internet is being used to store a lot of this information for public viewing.
