Working from home vs. working in an office

By Amy Jones

Some people, who find working in an office stressful, even if they are good at their job, may find working from home has several advantages. Others who are starting their own business, may also find there are advantages to keeping it in the home environment as long as it can physically stay there.

The time saved by not having to physically get ready in the morning and commute to an office is quite a lot. Imagine getting up and after having a quick breakfast being able to get stuck in. No loitering around listening to polite conversation, or having to sit through meetings where not much applies to you. Rather you can just get on with your work.

The money saved by not having to kit oneself out with five day worth of work clothes is huge, as well as the money spent on commuting and lunches and all sorts of things that working people get caught having to spend money on. It may be nice for the self-employed to have a separate work space, but not having to pay for commercial electricity and being able to use your own internet connection have huge money saving benefits.

Many people find they are much less stressed outside of an office environment and they can breathe easy and work better when they are out of the contrived atmosphere of the workplace. Others thrive in it. Working from home as well means that you are less likely to get sick as you will not be exposed to so many of the bugs that go around. You'll likely eat healthier as well as you won't be tempted by the snack machines and fast food places at lunch time.

Working from home will not work for everyone, but it is good if employers can recognize that certain people will thrive if they are allowed to work from home and not force people into a mould. Some people starting off feel they need a space outside the home to really concentrate, but the added expense of it may not be worth it, and they are better finding creative ways of making their home environment work friendly.
