A List Of The Best Knitting Patterns For The Winter 2011-2012 Season

By Katina Flores

As the weather turns chillier, many people start thinking about their cardigan knitting patterns, wondering what they should make this year. Although it's certainly possible to knit all year round, most of the classic pieces are intended for wearing or using during the winter. Options for knit items are as unconstrained as the minds of the people who think them up.

For those just starting out, a quality pattern book is a great investment. Look for one that explains all the basic techniques, and offers at least a couple patterns that you would like to try. Or, if you'd rather not purchase anything, look for tutorial videos and free patterns on the internet. There are many different sites that offer these as well as selling knitting yarns.

A long, straight piece of work, scarves are a great first project, and the end result can make a good gift. For those just moving on from the basics, scarves are also a great way to practice some more complicated, decorative stitches. Just be sure that any scarf you make is made of soft, non-scratchy yarn that can be washed, so that the wearer can enjoy it.

Hats and sweaters make a great next step up from scarves. There are both easy and much more complicated patterns, for people of all skill levels, and despite the famous horror of receiving a handmade sweater for the holidays, most people actually enjoy it. Expect to make a few mistakes as you learn more complex methods of knitting, though.

People who love knitting don't do it because it's cheap. Unfortunately, this is a relatively expensive hobby, and many people spend a fair amount of time trying to figure out how to find bargains for projects. One unique method of getting new yarns is to purchase sweaters at thrift stores and unravel them by hand. The yarn can then be reused for a new project.

Bag sales are good places to find cheaper yarns. But unless you are working on a lot of projects, you will probably end up with several that you have no use for. Most experienced knitters have a yarn collection of quite some size, full of odds and ends from bags and previous projects, which is great, but only if you have room for it.

Ideas for knitting projects are as varied as the things people can think up. Felted materials can be made easily and in interesting shapes and sizes by making them knit beforehand. Books on the subject are available, or the internet makes a great tutor, as in many other cases.

Knitting patterns are great starting places, but as you get better with your craft, you will find yourself wanting to make something that you just can't find the perfect pattern for. This is when you need to put on your creative hat, and start tweaking. Most people who really enjoy the craft eventually find that they enjoy making their own patterns, or at least modifying the ones that they are working from.
